CORONAVIRUS INFO and TIPS!

MD United Cargo & Freight, Transportation Services, Trucking Company, CDL Class A Drivers, Dispatch & Safety Team https://mdunited.com/

Posted By: Atlantic Logistics Management | 03.18.2021

How to tell if you have a cold or Corona. What to do. (This information is not directly from the CDC, but is from health professionals.)

This is what we all should know and focus on, and the HUGE takeaway is: DRINK LOTS OF WATER OFTEN!

  1. If you have a RUNNY NOSE and SPUTUM you do NOT have Coronavirus you have a common COLD!
  2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a DRY COUGH with NO RUNNY NOSE.
  3. This new virus is NOT heat-resistant and will be killed by a temperature of just 26/27 degrees celsius.
  4. If someone sneezes while having Coronavirus it takes about TEN FEET before the sneeze droplets hit the ground and are no longer airborne.
  5. If a sneeze does land on a metal surface it will live for at least TWELVE (12) HOURS! If you come into contact with ANY METAL surface, WASH YOUR HANDS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE with a bacterial soap. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE, EYES, NOSE, MOUTH, or wounds.
  6. The Corona Virus on fabric can last for SIX(6) to TWELVE (12) HOURS. Normal laundry detergent will kill it!
  7. Drinking warm water is effective for ALL viruses. Try NOT to drink liquids with ice.
  8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for FIVE (5) to TEN (10) minutes, BUT a lot can happen in that short time. You could rub your eyes, pick your nose unwittingly, and so on.
  9. You should also gargle as prevention. A simple solution of salt in warm water will suffice.
  10. Can’t emphasize enough- DRINK PLENTY OF WATER! Keep your mouth and throat moist constantly!

THE SYMPTOMS OF CORONAVIRUS:

  1. It will first infect your throat, so you’ll have a sore throat lasting about three to four days.
  2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about five to six days more.
  3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and great difficulty breathing.
  4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind you get with a common cold. Your feel like you are drowning. It is IMPERATIVE you THEN SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION!

SERIOUS EXCELLENT ADVICE by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19:

  1. Everyone should ensure your mouth and throat are moist and NEVER DRY!
  2. Take a few sips of water every FIFTEEN (15) minutes at least! Why? Even if the virus gets into your mouth, drinking water or other liquids will wash them down through your throat and into the stomach. Once there, the stomach acids will kill all the virus.
  3. If you DO NOT drink enough water more regularly, the virus can enter you windpipe and into your lungs. This is VERY dangerous. It can create fibrous tissues in the lungs that never goes away!
  4. This new Coronavirus may not show symptoms for many days.
  5. By the time they have a fever and/or cough and go to the hospital, the lung is usually 50% Fibrosis and it’s too late.
  6. (Fibrosis is NOT reversible!) Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check we can do every morning.
  7. Take a DEEP breath and HOLD your breath for more than TEN SECONDS. If you complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort, stiffness or tightness, etc, it proves there is no Fibrosis in the lungs. Basically indicates no infection.
  8. In critical times please self-check EVERY MORNING in an environment with clean air.

God Bless and Keep Us All Loving, Healthy and Safe!

15 Minute Fitness for Truckers

MD United Cargo & Freight, Transportation Services, Trucking Company, CDL Class A Drivers, Dispatch & Safety Team https://mdunited.com/

Posted By: Atlantic Logistics Management | 01.30.2020

The first month of 2020 flew by, and statistically by Jan 12th 80% of New Year’s resolutions have flown out the window too! Luckily changing health and fitness habits is not a yearly commitment, it’s a daily one. We have a fresh start every day to make better choices for ourselves. The issue with resolutions is that making a huge overhaul to our habits can be overwhelming and difficult to sustain.  Everyone knows that exercise does far more than just control weight, it also reduces our risk of heart disease, aids in managing blood sugar and helps cognitive skill keeping our memory strong. We all know that exercise is important but according to the CDC one-fourth of truckers are not doing any form of vigorous activity. Every step we take can make a difference, even 15 minutes a day reduces our risk of death by 35 percent.

Safety is always first whether behind the wheel or creating an exercise routine.  There is a slight increase of heart attack or cardiac complications when going from sedentary to active so getting a green light from a doctor is recommended for good reason. Another professional to consider is a personal trainer. Doing an exercise properly decreases the chances of injury and a trainer can help put together the ultimate workout. There are trainers who will meet a client at a truck stop or rest area.

There are single moves that incorporate more than one muscle group like squats, they are the perfect compound exercise, they activate the quadriceps, glutes and calves.  Combination can also be created by doing two types of exercises at the same time like a lunge and a bicep curl. The benefits of working multiple muscles include burning more calories, improving intramuscular coordination, elevating heart rate, improving strength and gaining more muscle mass. There a plethora of apps geared specifically for truckers building a workout. Cleo Hardy, from Atlanta, created an app called Iron Trucker Fitness and it includes a database of exercises drivers can do using their tractor-trailer.  This same app also has an exercise log to help track progress and keeping ourselves accountable is crucial to maintaining routine. The Active trucker is another popular app worth checking out.

In addition to apps there is additional support for drivers.  Pilot Flying J truck stops offer a wellness program and 600 travel center gyms. Travel America has locations with free exercise rooms, outdoor fitness stations and walking trails. Regular truck stops without special equipment can still be utilized for an effective work out.  Cardio can be done in place by jogging, dancing or jumping rope. The biggest obstacle is getting past the perception of others. Starting with even five minutes will help overcome feeling on display, by passers may notice but most will respect the dedication. Work out tools like weights, resistance bands and mats just make the work out even more official looking.

The truth is the information on fitness is endless and we know what we should be doing, but are we? There is no need to wait for next year to set a new goal, tomorrow is the perfect day to start over. Start with an easy goal of just 15 minutes of movement everyday and next time we will look at ways to increase daily activity.

Dealing with Distraction

MD United Cargo & Freight, Transportation Services, Trucking Company, CDL Class A Drivers, Dispatch & Safety Team https://mdunited.com/

When it comes to safety there is plenty of information at our fingertips and it may feel like its repetitive, yet with 4,000 truck drivers a year losing their lives in accidents, isn’t it worth the risk of repeating a few best practices?  One of the main issues we have on the road today is the increase of distracted drivers. Today we will look at best practices to deal with the rest of the distracted drivers around us by identifying them and controlling our variables.

Giving ourselves ample room to navigate is the first step to avoiding issues. Following too close is the number one reason for collisions so leaving more room only makes sense and gives us the time needed to react.  The best practice here is to alert the driver that their distraction is noticeable. A light tap of the horn is enough to jolt most drivers back to their focus on the road. Once the driver is alert it still makes sense to distance yourself from this driver.  They are likely to return to the source of their distraction.  Does this mean avoiding 1/3 of all the drivers on the road? In the simplest of terms, yes.   The only three things that we can do is identify the distracted driver, alert them that you are present and avoid them.

Before we can discuss the distraction of the other vehicle, we must address our own distractions. We tend to think we are more capable than others of multi-tasking. Studies have shown that over 84% of drivers found it unacceptable that other driver’s text or send emails while driving and yet 36% of the exact same drivers admit to having texted or emailed while driving.    There are different types of distractions but fall into three general categories:

Cognitive distraction

Cognitive (mental) distraction-the mind is focused on something besides driving. The driver may be lost in thought, listening to their favorite podcast and just not focused on driving.  This is the hardest distraction to overcome.  No one is suggesting giving up podcasts, just to balance out their potential to distract with remaining alert and focused.

 Visual distraction

If the driver’s eyes are off the road ahead or their surroundings, they are visually distracted. GPS devices are common source of distraction.

Manual distraction

When a driver has one or both hands off the wheel that is considered a manual distraction. Eating, Drinking, and Smoking are all examples of manual distraction.

Texting and driving combine all three forms of distraction which is why its now considered 6 times more dangerous than drunk driving. The following tips are not new, or different, or rocket science. They are same tips we all are aware of, but can we honestly say we do this every time we get behind the wheel?

Only use your cell phone for emergency situations.  Even hands free can distract a driver …

If you are drowsy pull off the road

Avoid eating while driving

Adjust lights, radio, climate and GPS before leaving

Now that you are alert and following at a safe distance it’s time to identify the signs of the distracted driver. The top three issues to watch out for:

Vehicle is drifting or cannot maintain a lane

Erratic braking or following other vehicles too closely

Speeding up and slowing down

There was recently a woman who hit a man outside his car, and he fell off a bridge.  Luckily, he was rescued but the woman was looking for a cookie in her purse. There are countless incidents of distracted behavior and the only thing we can do is watch for those not watching for us. Honking a horn and a light tap of the horn are different sentiments. Letting the driver know that they have drifted helps you stay alive and hopefully alerts them into focus.  Safety is a matter of doing what we know is right and helping those around us make those choices as well.
